Focus Lines

Making roads safer for everyone

Driving at night. No streetlights, straight roads and no traffic. The perfect ingredients for a phenomenon called ‘Highway Hypnosis’, which makes our attention slip away by gazing at the monotonous repetition of white lines. Driving in this trance-like state can be compared with ‘driving asleep with your eyes open’ and is one of the reasons why drowsy driving causes 1 in 6 deadly car accidents.

‘Focus Lines’ are colored dashed lines painted randomly over the existing white road markings. They serve as visual stimuli for drivers, breaking the hypnosing repetition of the road. The lines are painted in different high contrast colors and in different intervals, as not to become a repetition itself. The interval variable changes depending on the intended speed of the specific road, and the colors were chosen that initiated the biggest effects during the tests. ‘Focus Lines’ are extremely simple and cost-efficient to implement, making them accessible to countries on all continents.

Tested By Neuroscientists

We tested the variations of cerebral activation between a common path and the ‘Focus Lines’. We used Face Reading and Electro Encephalography. We analyzed in precision every face expression during the drive and measured in precision the brain activity.

This allowed us to record the level of attention and the emotions.

Test Results

The brain increased activity on the highway with focus lines.

  • The drivers’ levels of attention increased 4.78%

  • The numbers of times that drivers close their eyes on the ‘Focus Lines’ highway decreased 21.78%
  • The engagement on the ‘Focus Lines’ highway increased 20.58%, which means drivers are more concentrated on the task of driving.

In the post test, drivers notice the colored lines, with most of them seeing the difference between colors, and acknowledging the random interval they appear in.
